Children Rights in Education (CRiE)

Children Rights in Education (CRiE)

Children Rights in Education is an Initiative of the Bright Doves following the Committee on Right of Children’s (CRC) appeal that efforts be put in regard to raising awareness of the Convention and the Children Act among children and adults from the grassroots, especially in local communities.
The programme which targets learners in primary 4 to 7 aims at promoting children rights in schools, where the human dignity of the child is respected and where his/her rights in relation to education are put on the political agenda of educators and decision makers, has been under a pilot test within Kampala.
The pilot programme saw the Bright Doves and other volunteer trainers roll out to three schools within Kamwokya (i.e. Sharp Infant school, Hormisdallen P/S and King of Kings Junior School) in which we have been able to deliver CRiE lessons in different classes on a weekly basis.  CRiE has also moved to the Radio (i.e. on 101.7 Mama FM a Radio for the Uganda Media Women Association – UMWA) and members have been able to participate in a Radio Talk show once a month since June 2011.
Major Goal
The major goal of this program is to advocate for knowledge and respect of children rights among children within the age of 5 to 15 much as their superiors and caregivers and to reinforce values that emphasize freedom, democracy and non-violence.
Objectives
  • To extend within the formal and non-formal curricula teaching/ learning modules that touch upon ROC within basic life skills, democratic values, and learning competencies, with assessment and evaluation techniques.
  • To equip teachers, inspectors, counselors, and school principals in addition to youth leaders and social workers with interactive techniques that promote ROC and their practice.
  • To improve the learning environment in schools by involving children in curricula and extra-curricular activities within the guiding spirit of the CRC.
  • To encouraging the participation of teachers, parents/guardians and other active community members in Human/Children Rights’ clubs in schools and other extension programmes in our community.
The program also runs The Children’s Voice – a newsletter and a tool through which we have been able to communicate children’s ideas and appeal to the responsible persons to come to the rescue of children.
